What is Myofascial Release Therapy?

Myo is a prefix that denotes a relationship to muscle.

Fascial or Fascia is the fibrous connective tissue that permeates the human body. It surrounds muscles, groups of muscles, nerves and blood vessels and binds those structures together. It spans from head to toe. It can become impaired, altered or restricted through any number of diseases including, but not limited to, stress, back pain, fibromyalgia, neurological dysfunction or physical injury. Myofascial restrictions can affect other body organs through tension in the whole fascia causing a wide range of pain and symptoms.

Release of myofascial restrictions is attained by constant direct pressure on selected areas of the fascia as part of this therapy. It can affect other body organs by unwinding tension in the whole fascia system. This release or unwinding of tension and restrictions helps relieve aches and pains and can help the patient feel better.

MyoFascial Release Therapy Myofascial release (MFR) is a hands-on therapy which targets chronic pains all over the body. It consists of gentle application of sustained pressure into areas of your body that will result in heat and increased blood flow in the area. This allows the body's inherent ability for self correction to return, thus eliminating pain and restoring the optimum performance of the body.

Every Myofascial Release Treatment is performed directly on the skin without oils, creams, or machinery. This approach allows the therapist to more accurately detect tension and restrictions and apply the necessary amount pressure to provide relief.

Myofascial Release was originated in Osteopathy schools in the late 19th century and taught to Physiotherapists. More recently it has been advanced by John F. Barnes, PT. He is credited with revolutionizing this therapy to the point where it is considered to be the ultimate mind/body healing treatment. It is now taught to physical therapists, occupational therapists, nurses and physicians.
